Episode 129: Your Migraine Isn’t One Thing with Dr. Amelia Scott Barrett

Maybe migraines were never your thing. Then midlife arrived. Now you’re hiding in a dark room, nauseous, waiting for the pounding to stop. As estrogen dips and swings through perimenopause, many women meet migraines for the first time. Others watch old ones get louder.
This week I sit down with Dr. Amelia Scott Barrett. She spent 25 years as a neurologist treating headache disorders before stepping off the beaten path. Today she blends neurology, functional medicine and genomics to find what’s really filling each woman’s migraine bucket. We talk estrogen, stress chemistry, hidden toxins, and why one treatment can work beautifully for one woman and do nothing for the next.
In this episode we explore:
Why estrogen drops at ovulation, before your period and through perimenopause can set off a migraine
The “tipping bucket”: how hormones, stress, sleep, toxins and blood sugar add up until the pain spills over
How genes like COMT shape your stress response and which migraine meds are likely to work for you
Migraines and HRT: why a past “no” to the pill doesn’t automatically mean no to HRT now
Dr. Barrett’s food triangle (protein, fiber, phytonutrients) and why “eat sugar every few hours” backfires
